If I ruled the world…

By Soller Shirley

Did you play that game when you were a child?  You sat in a circle and had to answer the question.  Repetition was not allowed and if you came anywhere near an answer already given you were ‘out’. There were always about six common answers and then you struggled.  A bit like local, national politics and responses in newspapers.  We all have the easy answers and even these prove difficult to implement.

If I ruled the world locally, is the conversational game often played here.  We all have the answers about what ‘they’ should do.  ‘They’ being the Town Hall, The Consell in Palma and those in power in Madrid.  The decision-making powers flow through them all and in addition the Ports Authority, for decisions round the coastline.

So, FOUR decision making bodies have influence on what happens in the Soller Valley. It would be fascinating to get them all sitting cross legged in a circle and ask that question.

I raise this today, as on Monday 2nd September 2024 everyone puts summer behind them and gets on with doing what they were elected to do.

Before I am accused of ‘sitting on the fence’ I will give you the six on my wish list, if I ruled the world.

Feed the children – child poverty in Mallorca is unacceptable on every level

House local people – Empty houses could house people NOW

Support the elderly in all their medical and social needs

Introduce a realistic living wage – the days of earning 1500 euros a month or less should end

Finance an all-island transport system to benefit all.

Education, Education, Education – for local children to achieve their full potential

If you ruled the world – a discussion for NOW
