AUGUST the maddest of months …
Today is the start of the grouse shooting season in the UK. ‘The Glorious 12th ‘is the title given to this date and it means something in country houses and estates of the moneyed sets. The shoot is a way to have a summer house party with your friends and goes alongside tennis and Pimms on the lawn.
In Mallorca the middle of August is significant because so many businesses shut down or work half time in the searing heat. In Soller this is accentuated by the fact that it is Fiesta Time and the Nit of the Art on Saturday 16th August gives way to two weeks of art, music and mayhem as the San Bartholomew Fiesta gets underway on the 21st. So it is safe to say that from now until the end of August Soller gives itself up to pleasure.
The police came knocking on the door of an outlying finca in Soller. Searched the premises and found 18 cannabis plants growing, they also found dried weed and scales. Arrests were made and links to a chain of supply in Inca and Llucmajor. Locals found it difficult to restrain their mirth at the slapstick comedy. A full scale dawn swoop for 18 plants – it must be August…
The Estate Agents of Soller have no time to catch up with paperwork in a cool air conditioned office. They are rushing round showing prospective buyers the many houses of the Valley. The relatively strong pound and the increase in visitor numbers to the Soller area are really showing itself this year. I feel sorry for the ‘dripping’ agents as they tread the streets in the 45 degrees heat that Soller has been experiencing. If you see them stagger past a glass of water and a cheery wave would be appreciated.
Keep up to date with all that is going on in Soller and the Hidden Valley by checking into the EVENTS CALENDER on the front page of www.sollerweb.com. So much to see, do and enjoy in this eccentric beautiful place in August …
