The BANK HOLIDAYS of Soller – unravelled
The list has been published for the Bank Holidays for Spain for 2015 which I will print here. This is not the whole picture because in addition to these dates there are the Balearic Bank Holidays – which I will also list. To round it all off there are Soller Bank Holidays too. This means that any town or village in Mallorca can have a Bank Holiday when its neighbours do not. These holidays are usually around their local fiestas and in Soller’s case it gives a local fiesta after the Firo in May and the Sant Bartholomew celebrations in August.
On Bank Holidays the banks and public offices are closed for business. Sometimes shops are closed or choose to open for half a day. They will always advertise their hours in advance so watch out for special times of opening and closing around these times. Local people take their Fiesta times very seriously and family and friends gathering in large groups is the norm. Beach and mountain picnics and big table restaurant lunches happen. A Bank Holiday is a day to do something else other than work or be domestic in their opinion.
When Bank Holidays occur at weekends the tradition was to give a day off in lieu of that holiday immediately after. However there has been a change in attitude to this since the recession and those days are rarely given now while Spain is still working itself out of its financial problems.
